The food - A comida

Estas férias começaram com a descoberta de Estremoz. Bonita cidade relativamente perto de Vila Boim mas que, por razões insodaveis, evitàmos sempre... preferindo Borba ou Vila Viçosa. Talvez a adega cooperativa de Borba seja um inicio de explicação. A verdade é que nunca calhou. E desta vez fomos até estremoz três vezes, ou quatro; não hà fome que não dê em fartura.
E falando em farture e fome, uma das descobertas foi logo ao almoço do primeiro dia. Subimos ao castelo e paramos numa pequna esplanada à sombra dos velhos edificios da parte historica. Ora bem, tratava-se de um optimo restaurante, requintando e contemporaneo mas integrando a arquitectura quinhentista da antiga prisão e oferecendo com ares de nouvelle cuisine o melhor da cosinha alentajana tradicional... requinte e popular sabedoria... servidos por gente muita sipatica que gosta e acredita no que faz. Incontornavel... a Inês até convidou a avo a nos oferecer o jantar de anos... optima razão para parar na casa cadeia e ai ficar durante duas jogadas.

We began our summer holidays by discovering Estremoz, a very attractive castle town in the Alentejo not far from the farm, but mysteriously avoided during former stays where the choosen spots were Borba and Vila Viçosa. There is no obvious reason for that... maybe the wine seller in Borba? Nahhh!! The fact is this time we went to Estremoz 3 or 4 times. The first day we walked up to the castle (see some pics from Portuguese grandad in article from 19/07) a stop for a drink and a quick lunch on a terrace in the shade of the ancient buildings, which turned out to be a nice surprise. We found a marvellous restaurant that took up residence in 2005 in the old XVI Century prison. It's a smart place! Refined and contemporary details with a traditional feel... very good wild and organic ingredients... all served up by very friendly people that believe in and like what they are doing. Inês convinced her grandma to have her birthday dinner there... luckily it wasn't all "porridge"! For those who remeber "Le Celli" at the top of Spen Lane, this is about 20 times better!
