Time has been short to blog recent news. The Father Quince restarted is teaching at the University and for that reason he is travelling each week to Le Havre, Normandy. I’ll try to blog a short article about Le Havre and Honfleur, two cities opposite to each other with the Seine estuary flowing in the middle. Their opposition is not just estuarine, it is a class opposition as well. Le Havre is very (poor) working class, Honfleur is shared by the retired Paris Bourgeoisie and some British and American wealthy travelling class. That is why I like them both.
But this week the trip to Normandy was longer. The venue of this year congress of the French Rheological Society happened to be Cherbourg, a city in the northern limit of Normandy that falls into the channel and where it is impossible to be just passing by. Ok, you may be just passing by if you take the ferry to Britain. But that happens only to the british. So , the Quinces do pass trough some times. The city is well known by their cats and dogs brought by the rain as well by their famous umbrellas, internationally known after Jacques Demy film with Catherine Deneuve. This year the invited lecturer was Father-Quince because of his knowledge of the way marine muddy bottoms use to flow. Between smart dinners and posh pomp and circumstance I was given a famous and authentic Cherbourg’s Umbrella. The Lady under the umbrella was not a gift. I already had her before. But it is really a good souvenir of Cherbourg where there is only rain and British tourists. I add a picture from my room at the Hotel Ambassadeur.. Diplomacy is not the fashion any more.
